The Nigeria Union of Teachers( NUT) has urged the Cross River State Government to as a matter of urgency look into the upscaling of teachers remuneration in order to boost thier morale with a view to meet up with current economic realities.

The chairman of the Union in the state , Comrade Gregory Olayi made the call while addressing members, during the World Teachers Day Celebration at the U.J Esuene stadium on Saturday, in Calabar.

Com. Olayi who called for speedy implementation of promotion areas by the state government said it was important so that they can be at par with their counterparts in other field of discipline.

The NUT Chairman who decried the delay in the payment of the low wage paid particularly to the primary school described the situation as bad for the teachers, especially with the current economic realities

” It has been observed that the state workers receive their salaries early enough while the primary school teachers collect theirs two or more weeks later,” he decried.

Speaking further, Com. Olayi enumerated other challenges facing Teachers in the state to include, granting of tax exemption to all teachers, lack of science laboratory and equipment, infrastructure decay in schools amongst others .

“NUT demands the appointment of teachers as permanent Secretaries and promotion of teachers into garde level 17 as applicable to another professionals in the state public service.

“Appointment of teachers into the Education Board as contained in the legal status establishing these boards, calling on the state government to desist forthwith from marginalizing teachers from such appointments.

Responding,the Cross River State governor Bassey Otu represented by the state commissioner for Education, Dr. Stephen Odey, assured the teachers union of the government’s willingness to meet their demands.

On his part, Secretary to State Government (SSG), Prof Owan Enoh stated that as a former teacher, he will not be in government and allow teachers to suffer stressing that the government would do all on its power to make sure teachers were more comfortable.
