The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Cross River State has threatened to request the Federal Government to suspend monthly allocations to the state’s 18 local governments if Governor Bassey Otu does not hold council elections by December 2024.
IPAC Chairman Engr. Effiom Edet issued the ultimatum during a press conference on Friday, urging the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) to promptly release the election timetable.
The council also called on Governor Otu to sign the recently passed CROSIEC Bill, which amends the law governing local council elections.
Edet stated that IPAC demands the governor to conduct the long-awaited local government elections by the end of December 2024. If the elections are not held on time, IPAC will seek to have federal allocations to the local governments halted.
IPAC further called on CROSIEC to ensure the elections are conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful manner.
