"Address Fuel Price Hike" - Cross River APC Chairman Appeals to Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman for Cross River State, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, has issued an urgent appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to intervene and address the recent increase in fuel prices announced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). 

In an open letter to the President, Eba expressed concern over the potential backlash from Nigerians following the price hike, which coincided with the long-awaited commencement of production at the Dangote Refinery. Eba, a staunch supporter of President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, warned that the decision to increase fuel prices could lead to widespread discontent and could harm the party’s political fortunes.

“I beg you in the name of God to do everything humanly possible to reverse this unfortunate increase or, at the very least, introduce a partial subsidy to alleviate the hardship caused by this development,” Eba stated in his letter. He further stressed the urgency of the matter, citing the potential risks to both social and food security if the situation is not addressed promptly.

The APC Chairman indicated his intention to raise the issue during the upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on September 12, 2024, and called for negotiations with the Dangote Refinery to establish a reasonable and subsidized fuel price for Nigerians.

Eba emphasized that the welfare and happiness of the Nigerian people must remain the government’s central focus and warned that failure to act could jeopardize the party’s standing in future elections.

“I am totally against this price increment, which could be a harbinger of electoral misfortune for our party in the years to come,” he concluded.

The letter reflects growing concerns among political leaders about the impact of the fuel price increase on the country’s socio-economic stability and the ruling party’s public image.
