Women in Cross River State at the weekend appealed to Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong representing the Southern District of Cross River State to provide them with bicycles and wheebartows to ease their farming.

Mrs Benita Usang, the women leader who spoke on their behalf at Biase Local Government Area when Senator Ekpenyong held a Town Hall Meeting with the people of the area said owing to the difficult foot paths to their farms, bicycles and wheelbarrows are the best means though which they can move their farm produce back to their houses.

“It is easier to push bicycles and wheelbarrows through those muddy paths to the farms that okada and keke napep cannot pass though.and if the load is too much for us to push, our husbands would help us out.”

She said the women need grants and financial assistance to start up businesses as well as buy inputs for their farms.

Addressing the people earlier, Senator Ekpenyong assured them of his commitment to their needs and development of the district.

Senator Ekpenyong said the town hall meeting is held to interact with the people to mark his one year in office stating that he is in a hurry to make every ward of the seven local government areas of the district to feel the impact of his representation.

“We have been in Abuja for the past one year making laws for this country and during that period I have presented six bills and moved four motions which directly touch on the lives of the people.

“Beginning from the Water Ways Bills to the NDDC bill and the one that touches my heart the most is the Motion for the treatment of gunshot would victims while awaiting police report to save lives”

He said he has sponsored two medical outreaches where three hundred persons have received free surgeries from live threatening diseases and more outreaches are in the offing.

“We have established a technology centre in Ehom within the first twenty days of my assumption of office, we have lit up many communities in Biase and provided employment, empowerment and financial grants to small scale business owners including youths and women and I can assure you confidently that we will do more to uplift the lives of our people and develop our areas.”

Ekpenyong who is identified as the best performing senator in the state said he is passionate about the wellbeing of the people and has spent two hundred million naira to provide grants to youths, women and men of the district in the past one year.

Many respondents eulogised him for the efforts he has made so far the area and prayed for his success in the Senate.

They asked for the construction of roads many of the which construction was abandoned by NDDC contractors and the provision of boreholes to meet their water needs.

The needs are basically the same across the seven local government areas except in some cases were he was asked to give contracts in the sum of hundreds of millions and billions which he outrightly said he couldn’t since he was not in the executive but in the legislature where he can only make laws.
