UNICAL undergraduate sets world record of 188 hours longest duration in write-a-thon

 

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) undergraduate, Daniel Ehis Aiguokhian, has set the world record for the longest duration of 188 hours write-a-thon.

A write-a-thon of fiction and non-fiction for 188 hours ran for 8 days and was held at the University of Calabar Students Union Government (SUG) Senate Chamber.

The event which took place at the SUG secretariat attracted the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Florence Banku Obi, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Tony Enyang, principal officers, the media and the students.

Speaking shortly after the completion of the longest duration of writing by the Edo-born Daniel Ehis, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi described the action as a phenomenal feat pointing out that the student has placed the University on a positive path.

Prof. Obi said: “The management had already informed the minister of education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, and the acting secretary general of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prince Mayaki, of the event and promised that the student would break a record.


“Great authors like Prof. Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Adichie who had written several books but they couldn’t write for one hundred and eighty-eight hours continuously but Daniel Ehis completed writing 17 books of both fiction and nonfiction stories continuously.


“I call on other students to emulate Daniel in the effort to give the institution international recognition. Besides, the management would not hesitate to give the student a facelift as it has already written to Guinness about the 188 hours longest duration write-a-thon.”

Responding to questions, the writer, Daniel Ehis, said: I am happy to complete the write-a-thon and encouraged young people to toe the path of writing.

“I am a passionate advocate for literacy, education and promoting resilience among Nigerian students.

“The write-a-thon is not a personal challenge but a unique opportunity and means to champion literacy and commemorate the spirit of resilience amongst students in the country.
