The Command debunked the claims in a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Irene Ugbo stating that the purported voice notes are misinforming and misleading, which is a calculated attempt to incite members of the public to panic.
She said the Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogo Augustine Grimah has enjoined residents to disregard the voice note and warn against the spread or peddling of an incident that never occurred.
CP Grimah added that a background check was carried out by the Police Command and the hotel management also confirmed no such incident was recorded as claimed.
The release reads: “The attention of the Cross River State Police Command has been drawn to the viral “voice notes” on social media that a lady was murdered by three (3) Yahoo boys presently in police custody at the State Housing Division over the weekend.
“The police command wishes to state that the voice note is misinforming and misleading, which is a calculated attempt to incite members of the public to panic.
“The CP, therefore, enjoin residents to disregard the voice note and warn against the spread or peddling of an incident that never occurred.
“He added that a background check was carried out by the police command and the hotel management also confirmed no such incident was recorded as claimed.”
