The House of Representatives member representing Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South federal constituency of Cross River State in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Joseph Bassey, has celebrated his inauguration as House of Representatives lawmaker with his constituents, friends, stakeholders of the APC and the government of Cross River.

The colorful event, which took place in Akpabuyo local government area of the State, had in attendance the Governor of Cross River and his deputy, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, State legislators, APC stakeholders, traditional rulers, men/women, youth groups amongst others.

Speaking, the federal member thanked his constituents for voting massively for him during the election.

He said that their overwhelming support and trust in him have not gone unnoticed, hence his desire to make the federal constituency great

Bassey said that his victory at the polls was for the good of his constituency, irrespective of party affiliation.

While assuring his constituents of his desire to improve on their welfare and the growth of basic education in the federal constituency, he donated the sum of N10million as support to 30 secondary schools in Akpabuyo, Bakassi and Calabar South LGAs including some primary schools in the area.

He explained that 10 secondary schools from each local government area were chosen for the educational support fund.

According to him, the criteria used in selecting the beneficiaries was based on their performances in class, adding that the fund was to encourage them to be the best and perform excellently in their academic pursuit.

The Rep member said that over 200 beneficiaries were selected from the 30 schools in the three local government areas that constitute the federal constituency.

 

He maintained that the educational support was to help the beneficiaries for their National Examination Council (NECO) registration, while the support for primary schools was to help in the registration of their common entrance examination and other school materials.

 

He issued cheques to the beneficiaries and advised them to always take their academic work seriously.

He urged youths in the area to always embrace peace and shun all forms of social vices, adding that he has mapped out plans to get them meaningfully engaged in productive ventures.

Also speaking, the Governor of Cross River, Senator Bassey Otu, who congratulated the Rep member for his inauguration into the Green Chamber of the National Assembly, described him as ‘a man of the people’.

The governor also announced the sum of N5million as his support for the education of the students in the federal constituency.
