Cross River Launches Social Reorientation Scheme

A programme designed to change the mindset of young people towards imbibing ethics has been launched in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, south-south Nigeria.

The launching of the reorientation scheme tagged “Ethical Rebirth Programme”, was announced by the Deputy Governor of the state, Professor Ivara Esu during the independence day celebration in Calabar.

Professor Esu said that the programme, which is domiciled in the Department of Orientation and Public Affairs, was designed to change the mindsets of the people, especially youths, towards imbibing sustainable values.

According to him, “our youths have become increasingly restless and found their expression in their involvements in kidnapping, armed robberies, drug abuse, arson, drunkenness and cultism.

“Thankfully, the State’s Ethical Rebirth Programme anchored in the Department of Orientation and Public Affairs has in place a value system to assist in the transformation of the mindset of the people by encouraging citizens to go back to those defining values that distinguishes us from others,” he said.

The Deputy Governor said that despite the socio-economic challenges in Cross River, “we have renewed our faith, our collective unity and boast of many tangible achievements since the advent of this administration.”

Esu remarked that Governor Ben Ayade’s led administration has made significant progress in industrialisation, education, healthcare, agriculture and infrastructure.

He expressed the hope that the virtues of peace, hard work and honesty would continue to be the guiding principles of citizens as well as commended the legislature and judiciary for working in synergy with the executives.

The Secretary to the State Government, Tina Agbor urged Nigerians to reflect on “our chequered history and journey to nationhood. We must endeavour to continuously promote our national values and unity as a people under one political and administrative banner.”

She urged all Nigerians to join hands with the State and Nigerian Government to build an egalitarian society.

The event was attended by school children, a cross section of the political class, service chiefs and well wishers.
