Maj. General Moses Bisong Obi (rtd) is a Nigerian hero, and retired General of the Nigerian Army.

Gen. Obi who hails from Oku-Bushuyu in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, is also the Chairman of Ochibe Bokyi, the highest decision making body in Boki Nation of Nigeria and the Cameroons.

Gen. Obi attended the Nigerian Military School, Zaria after which he proceeded to the Nigerian Defence Academy as well as several military and civil courses locally and in the USA, UK, China etc.

Born in Nigeria in 1956, he is married to Mrs Patricia Obi and they are blessed with four children, three of whom are uniformed officers proudly serving the Federal Republic of Nigeria.


Major-General MB Obi Military Missions and Appointments

Major General Obi has served in two previous United Nations peacekeeping missions, as Platoon Commander in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and as Deputy Sector Commander in the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).  He was also Commanding Officer of the ECOWAS [Economic Community of West African States] Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), Commanding Officer of the Multi-National Joint Task Force Operation in Lake Chad, and Acting Commander of the ECOMOG Ground Task Force in Liberia.​ He also led the multinational operation in the Lake Chad Area​ against Chad-based terrorists.

Gen. Obi was then appointed the Chief of Training and Operations, Army (CTOP’A’) at the Army Headquarters in Abuja. He had also served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Division, Nigerian Army.


Major-General MB Obi Awards and Other Appointments.


General Obi is a 2004 recipient of the National Honours Award of the Officer of the Order of Niger (OON), for professional Excellence in military service. He also has the Cross River State Medal of Honour alongside a hundred other awards and recognitions.

On 10th June 2010, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of General Moses Bisong Obi of Nigeria as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), where he succeeded Lieutenant General Paban Jung Thapa of Nepal.

The UN Secretary General then handpicked Gen. Obi for appointment as the Commander of the United Nation Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), as its first Force Commander. Gen. Obj played an important role in establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship between the South Sudan Army (SPLA), the Government of Sudan and sundry militia, ensuring the successful take-off of the Republic of South Sudan.
