1. NIMC Workers Suspend Strike To Begin NIN Registration The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) workers on Friday suspended the industrial action which they embarked upon on Thursday over the fear of COVID-19 spread in the agency. The workers suspended their strike after a meeting with the Federal Government, where it was agreed that the demands of the employees would be addressed.

 2. Boko Haram Kills Many In Fresh Cameroon Attack An attack on a village in northern Cameroon by Boko Haram jihadists on Friday left thirteen civilians, eight of them children. A traditional chief and a police officer confirmed to AFP that the killing was done after a woman suicide bomber blew herself up. Cameroon’s Far North region is grappling with deadly incursions from neighboring Nigeria, where an insurgency launched by Boko Haram in 2009 has killed tens of thousands of people. 

3. Gov Sanwo-Olu Halts Appointment Of New LASU VC Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered a fresh process for the appoint of a new Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU). The cancellation of the process for the appointment of the 9th VC was announced on Friday evening, January 8 by the governor’s spokesman, Gboyega Akosile. 

4. LASU Pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folabi Olumide Dies At 81 The pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Folabi Olumide has died at the age of 81. The academic and medical surgeon died on Friday, 8th January after a brief illness, Naija News understands. His death was confirmed in a statement on Friday by the current LASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun who prayed God to give family members and other associates the fortitude to bear the loss. 

5. Donald Trump Speaks On Attending Joe Biden’s Inauguration United States President Donald Trump has said he will not attend the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20, 2021. “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Friday. 

6. Buhari Reveals When Boko Haram, Bandits Will Be Defeated President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that Boko Haram insurgents and bandits in the northwest will be defeated before the year 2021 ends. Buhari made this known when speaking during the Juma’at Prayer for the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration at the National Mosque. 

7. FG Reveals When It Will Impose Fresh Nationwide COVID-19 Lockdown The President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has said it will impose a fresh nationwide lockdown if the rising cases of COVID-19 infections recorded lately continue. This was made known by the National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Sani Aliyu, during a briefing in Abuja. According to the PTF Coordinator, the rising coronavirus infections recorded of recent in the country may force the federal government to declare a new lockdown.

 8. COVID-19: UK Imposes Travel Ban On 11 African Countries The United Kingdom has placed a travel ban on 11 African countries as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus variant. This development was announced in a statement published on 7th January by the UK Department for Transport on the government’s website. The statement which also removed some initially banned countries from the list, noted that the fresh directive becomes effective as from 4am on Saturday, January 9. 

9. UNILAG Shuts Staff Club Over Spread Of COVID-19 The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has ordered the immediate shutdown of its Staff Club. In a short statement on Friday, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, said the closure was to curb the spread of the dreaded COVID-19 on campus as a result of a second wave of the pandemic in the country. He added that the closure was in compliance with the Lagos State Government’s directive about the closure of all social clubs and recreational centers in the state.

 10. NDLEA Releases List Of Successful Candidates For Recruitment The management of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has released the list of successful candidates for recruitment into the agency. This development was confirmed on Friday in a statement in Abuja by the NDLEA spokesman, Deputy Commander of Narcotics (DCN) Jonah Achema. He noted that 5,000 individuals were successful in the recruitment exercise and directed them to report at the agency’s training center located in Katton-Rikkos, Jos, Plateau State for screening and documentation.
