The Commissioner For Local Government Hon Stella Odey, during the Joint Account Allocation Committee meeting on Monday at the conference Hall of the ministry of Local Government Affairs which has the health Commissioner Dr Betta Edu in attendance, declared her full support in making sure that Local Government Chairmen fight the Coronavirus pandemic at the grassroot effectively.
The discussion centered on the Local Government Chairmen calling together the already existing COVID-19 Taskforce and Rapid Response team in their LGA to a proper coordinated response directly supported by the chairmen. Hon. Stella stated that, now that local government structure is in place, it is imperative the fight against the deadly pandemic be intensified at the rural areas for the purpose of safeguarding the poor people at home.
The health Commissioner, Dr. Edu told the Chairmen to hold health workers in their LGAs and the rapid response team accountable for sensitization, sample collection, sample transportation, point of entry protection and contact tracing.
Yala Chairman, Barr. Fabian, sort for restructuring of the Taskforce at the LGA and improved funding at the grassroots to support wider sensitization. Akampa LGA chairman asked for support to strengthen the borders team to resist Cameroon refugees from coming into the state through Akampa. Bakassi and Boki asked for construction of General Hospitals in their LGAs while building capacity of the health workforce to manage other illnesses aside COVID-19.
In conclusion, the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs reechoed her readiness to support in all ramifications the council Chairmen in making sure the common man at the grassroot are protected and kept save from the deadly virus.
