Representative of Ekiti West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mrs. Olubunmi Ogunlola, has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the nation’s agricultural sector

Ogunlola made the call while speaking with newsmen yesterday in Ijero-Ekiti, Ekiti State, saying the present agricultural practice, which depended majorly on manual tools, was not good and rewarding enough to attract young Nigerians to farming.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that she also canvassed huge investments in the sector to attract productive population and reduce insecurity and other heinous crimes, especially among the youths. She argued that declaring a state of emergency in the sector would allow more funding that would address the high rate of unemployment and poverty among youths in the country.

Ogunlola said as part of her own contributions to the sector, she had empowered farmers from all the 33 wards in Ekiti West, Efon and Ijero council areas that make up her constituency. She said all the beneficiaries were empowered with cash and various modern farming tools such as spraying machines, fertilisers, insecticides and herbicides.

While urging relevant stakeholders to join the various levels of government to make farming attractive to youths in the country, she added, “I know government is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts at bringing agriculture back to its old status and this is commendable.“However, if the Federal Government is serious about creating employment through agriculture, then it must make farming more attractive to the youths.”
