[BOKI] Farmers, Consumers Complain of Low Yield in Maize

Poor harvest and losses of farm produce remain a daunting challenge to farmers in Nigeria due to inadequate storage and processing facilities. This year, Farmers in Boki local government area of Cross River State have experienced poor harvest in maize farming.

Maize which is popularly referred to as corn is one of the staple food crops in Nigeria. The crop provides steady income for the teaming unemployed labour force and has the potential of bridging the food security gap among the households. 

Speaking to Boki Blog in Okundi, A Maize farmer Agnes Ndifon said "The harvest in maize this year is very poor as compared to other years, between 2015 - 2018 corn was surplus and I made lots of sales and profit" she said.

"Last year there was lots of Maize in the market up till September, but this year you can hardly see maize this early days of August in the market". She added

Speaking to our correspondent in Wula, Franklin Ogar who spoke in Bokyi language said "It's shocking that Maize which has been the most surplus and common farm produce in Boki local government area had turned out to be limited in 2019".

According to Ogar "I'm praying that this situation never repeat itself the next time and that our New yam harvest should double up in order to cover our loses maize farming" he concluded.
