July 20th of every year is remarkable in the life of Comrade Daniel Obo, the immediate past DG of Cross River State Recreational Park Agency who hails from Obubra LGA in Cross River State. He is 36 year old today.
In line with the celebration of his birthday, Comrade Obo took a step further to outline the failure of political leadership and under-development of his ancestral LGA.
He said that looking at Obubra generally, the issue of leadership and development does not signify that the government was against the LGA, but that their representatives at various leadership positions have failed the entire Obubra nation.
According to him, it was not true that Obubra has been out of the orbit of power, but lamented that from the State House of Assembly to cabinet members and the National Assembly members, they have all failed in their various assignments to attract the needed development to the area.
Obo said that since 1999, the leadership of Obubra nation have always bargained for themselves, their family members and cronies instead of the collective benefit of the entire Obubra.
He said that the Mile 1 market in Obubra has remained undeveloped for ages, with little or no befitting structure to accommodate the market and give it a face lift.
"Uptil now, there is no good hotel in Obubra where people can come for an event and have a comfortable accommodation. You either lodge in Ikom or Yakurr and then return back to Obubra for your event, this is sad.
"As I speak with you, there are two hospitals in Obubra. As large as Obubra is, there is no urban centre and our internal roads are all bad to a point that you cant access some remote villages.
"It is not the issue that government is against us, it is the issue that we have poor representation and bargaining right for the interest of Obubra.
"We have members in the State House of Assembly; you think if they rise up today and move a motion for an urban centre in Obubra it wont be granted? Offcourse we will have it, but they have failed in their bargaining powers.
"The bargain that has to do with Obubra is always a poor one. As youths, we are taking a new lead because we cannot continue to leave with this poor amenities before us forever," he said.
He said that there was no need to blame Governor Ben Ayade for appointing just one Commissioner in his first term from Obubra, explaining that the competition for who becomes a Commissioner then arose blackmail from all quarters.
He lamented that whenever there was a political fight or leadership tussle in Obubra, no one would be considered fit for any political leadership again, saying that the trend has to stop forthwith.
In the days of late Chief John Okpa, there were regular meetings to unite Obubra, since his death, what we have now is PDP caucus, APC caucus; no Obubra caucus again, this is sad.
He lamented that "statesmanship in Obubra is completely dead", adding that the only time leaders from Obubra gather for a meeting is to discuss about politics.
According to him, when some of the leaders from Obubra leaves office, they go begging for survival, maintaining that there was no development in Obubra.
On the way forward, he asked the people of Obubra to leave up to expectations by having a strong bargaining power for the aggressive development of the area.
He advised those in leadership positions to stop the in-house fighting and work as a team for the interest of the area.
"We need an Obubra that irrespective of party lines, we must gather, think and talk as Obubra.
"In 2023 and going forward, we are building a new Obubra that will take up the leadership structure and erase the issue of underdevelopment in our area.
"We believe in the dream of a new Obubra and collectively as young men, we must braze up, throw up fear and chat a way forward," he said.
Happy birthday Comrade Obo.
May you continue to soar higher in all endeavours.
