The people of Bitiah Irruan, Boki Local Government Area, Cross River State, and members of surrounding communities witnessed what could naturally be termed a miracle.
A young man was at his farm at the tapering ends of the famous Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. Suddenly a visitor appeared - an adult female chimpanzee.
He stood still. The chimp moved towards him and, according to him, made signs it was hungry and needed food.
He provided bananas that were handy. Friendship was established. He made to go home and the animal accompanied him to the village. He had realized that the chimp could have escaped from the Drill Ranch facility at Buanchor, some ten kilometers across the mountain as the crow flies. Chimps and other important animals of the area are protected by law.
This and other animals could have been better protected if community members were not excluded from skewed wildlife and forest laws.
