Good Education is said to be the Bedrock of any thriving society. But it is quite saddening that the educational system in our very own home (Boki) is not doing fine.

Students seem to have lost the zeal for gaining positive knowledge, students who are sent to school to learn eventually spend most of their time doing unproductive activities.

Students skip classes to be in the bush with their mates doing what only God knows. While there are a thousand and one reasons why this is so, I would just outline a few.

A major factor responsible for this is the inadequate number of teachers to cover subject matters especially in public schools. Because of the few number of teachers in public schools, teachers are asked to take subjects there sometimes do not know very well and some are asked to teach to many classes, and they often end up missing some of their lesson periods as they get burned out after teaching some of the classes.

Also, poor attitude displayed by parents towards their Children or ward’s education. Some parents have unwritten constitution they have given to their Children or ward which affect their education. E.g. some parents do not allow their Child or ward to go to school on market days. I would not want to bore you with other examples as there are obvious.

Another reason this is so is the lack of learned hands in the educational system, in the sense that you find that sometimes sensitive subjects are being given to student-teachers to handle, most times this students on teaching practice do not have the requisite knowledge to impart students on the subject matter and in other not to appear incompetent accept the offer only to go to the classroom and become historians, telling students stories and leaving what they supposed to do.

A major factor also is the absence of motivating activities – activities that will excite the students towards education. It is baffling to note that in the entire Boki local government area there is no activity that spurs children towards facing their studies.

Activities like quiz competition, spelling bee, essay competition, and maths test would encourage students to bring out their very best. With competitions like this there is no doubt that there will be a great awakening towards facing studies in Boki. No doubts there have been competitions like this in the past but there are mostly organized by NYSC members therefore they lack continuity.

It is in this light that the Boki Voice Team has decided to organize academic competitions in Boki.

The event will feature the following activities;
Quiz competition
Spelling Bee
Essay Writing Competition
Maths Test

This has become necessary as there is an urgent need for the improvement of the educational standard in Boki, especially in the secondary classes. This will go a long way to motivate students to face their studies squarely.

T-Shirts for Organizers and Winners
